Jean-Pierre Conte on Where Private Philanthropy Fits in the Science Funding System

Public investment in science works through structures designed for accountability. Government grants from the National Institutes of Health typically fund projects for several years, after which researchers compete for renewed support. That mechanism allows funders to assess results and redirect resources. It also creates gaps.

Jean-Pierre Conte, managing partner of a San Francisco middle-market private equity firm and founder of the J-P Conte Family Foundation, has given in ways that address some of those gaps. That isn’t a claim to replace government funding. An August 2026 Impakter profile examined his philanthropic approach and the argument it implicitly makes about where private capital fits in scientific research.

The most direct example: his $5 million gift to the University of California, San Francisco in November 2024, which established two endowed professorships supporting Parkinson’s and neurodegenerative disease research. Endowments generate continuing support rather than expiring at the end of a grant cycle. That structure is better suited to research on diseases that have no cure, where multi-decade observation is often required to advance.

The Impakter piece also noted that philanthropic funding reflects donor priorities rather than priorities set through public processes or scientific peer review. Private giving can’t substitute for strong public investment in science. Its most useful function, the article argued, may be complementary: supplying patient capital for research, infrastructure, and experimentation that conventional funding mechanisms find difficult to sustain over time.

Jean-Pierre Conte’s environmental giving at Pepperwood Preserve makes a similar case. The preserve runs more than 80 long-term monitoring projects feeding hundreds of real-time data streams. Baseline ecological data of that kind is built over years and decades. The J-P Conte Family Foundation, which Conte founded in 2017, supports education, medical and scientific research, and environmental conservation. Each of those areas involves causes where concrete results don’t arrive on a standard funding cycle’s schedule.
